Exploring Pilsen, Chicago
Pilsen is a Latino community in Chicago’s South Side that is flowing with authentic flavors and culture. Here is a media package that will provide insights from locals, a sense of the neighborhood, and a Google map that will help make your trip as organized and memorable as possible!
Pilsen is known for its rich and diverse Latino culture. Easily accessible by the CTA Pink Line, there are many ways to experience this neighborhood. To make your life easier, here is a map of activities that will surely leave you satisfied.
A major part of any culture is the food. Pilsen is home to some of the best coffee shops in town, accompanied with colorful decorations and delicious specialty drinks. The Latin flavors don't end there. Restaurants and paleterias (Latin ice cream/dessert shops) uphold the diverse cuisine and desserts that come from the Latino culture.
Tons of unique shops in Pilsen give you the chance to support local businesses. From Mestiza shops to vintage fashion stores, you'll be sure to walk away with one of a kind wardrobe and accessory items.
If you are not looking to buy food or clothes, there is much more to do in this neighborhood. In the heart of Pilsen is the National Museum of Mexican Art. Lines form in Harrison Park where the museum lies for exhibits from Frida Kahlo, Day of the Dead, and more. There are also opportunities for open mics, art classes, and more. And what better way to end the day than with the ChiTown Drive-in Movie Theater?
Something to acknowledge before visiting Pilsen is its historical background and the cultural importance of the community carved out by immigrant families looking to bring a piece of Mexico into a shared space in Chicago. This neighborhood is filled with families who have lived in Pilsen for generations, many of which are being displaced by gentrification.
In order to get a deeper understanding of these issues taking place in Pilsen, I spoke with Alberto Cueto in my podcast Voice of the Streets.
The Resurrection Project is a non-profit organization that provides resources for the community to help improve living conditions through housing, financial wellness, and education on immigrant rights.
